Why I care about climate change
I care about the environment because:
- My survival, the survival of my loved ones, and billions of other human beings and all the species around the world depend on this finely tuned earth system we all share and now are unraveling before our eyes.
- Human-caused warming of the earth and destruction of the natural habitat has shown us how painful life can become if we do not reverse course and take care of the only planet we have.
- The regularity of seasonal change, of temperatures, of rain, and of snow not only make human and animal life predictable but it regulates the planting and harvesting of foodstuff necessary for the survival of the ever-expanding world population.
- The intensity and destruction of storms and fires devastate lives worldwide, taking away natural and financial resources that are the basic ingredients of economic well-being and human progress.
- The poor of the world, wherever they may live, will pay the highest price for the overconsumption and the recklessness of the affluent.
- Governments of the world have had since at least the late 1980s to take climate change seriously and they have failed miserably.
- Those responsible for the warming of the earth are refusing to acknowledge the seriousness of the climate crisis let alone mitigate the crisis.
- The corporate media has either ignored the emerging crisis or has only paid lip service to risks ahead.
- The public remains either misinformed, believes climate change will not affect them personally, or are unwilling to accept the immediacy of climate change threat and begin the march to zero emission.
- Organized publics around the world remain dispersed and so far, mostly ineffective.
